Thumbelina

The sculpture of Thumbelina (or "Tommelise" in Danish) lies in Blackfriars Square in the very heart of the old city of Odense. It is cast in bronze and is more than three metres high. It depicts an enormous flower opening to reveal the little girl of the Andersen story nestling inside. The sculpture was commisioned from Lotte Olsen and unveiled in 1994. It is one of a series of popular works around the city that depict characters from the tales of Hans Christian Andersen, who was born in Odense.
