Bertel Thorvaldsen was an important 19th century sculptor who lived in Rome for most of his life. He bequeathed his collection to his native city and a museum was built to house it. The works on display are dominated largely by Thorvaldsen’s own sculptures, but are complemented by studies and preliminary models, as well as other Danish art from the period and as a collection of antiquities. Thorvaldsen’s museum is the oldest public museum in Denmark and is located on Slotsholmen near the Christianborg palace.
