The Stork Fountain is one of the most famous landmarks in Copenhagen and provides a favourite meeting point for locals and tourists. It lies in the very heart of Amagertorv, which is the busiest square on the Strøget shopping street. Amagertorv is full of cafes, street performers, and peaceful protestors almost all the time. The name of the Stork Fountain, erected late in the nineteenth century and created by sculptor Pedersen, is in fact a misnomer. It is supposed to depict herons. Nonetheless, the name has stuck, and as a consequence it is the site of a famous annual tradition, where graduating midwives dance around it.
