The statue of Kaj Munk stands in the heart of Maribo and is a monument to one of Lolland’s most famous and revered sons. It is a sculpture cast in bronze by Luckow-Nielsen. It was erected here in 1964. Kaj Munk was a poet and priest who became a leading public figure in Denmark. Ultimately fiercely critical of the Nazi regime, and its actions during the occupation of Denmark, Munk’s body was found dumped in the countryside after he was murdered by the Gestapo. He is regarded by many as a saint and martyr.
