St Mary’s Church was originally part of the Carmelite monastery, until the reformation, when it became a church for the influential German-speaking population. It was built over the course of a hundred years beginning in 1430. The medieval murals are particularly striking and have been extensively renovated recently. Another feature of note is the magnificent and recently restored organ, which makes the church a frequent concert venue. The church has long been connected with music; the German composer Buxtehude was organist here in the seventeenth century.
