Sct. Marie Kirke is an old and magnificent church with significant aristocratic connections in the centre of Sønderborg. Duke Hans the Younger founded it in 1600, when this part of Denmark was the property of the Schleswig Dukes, and the church still contains a Ducal chair. Much of the interior furnishing dates back to the sixteenth or seventeenth century, including an ornate locally carved altarpiece and pulpit. The font and crucifix date from the sixteenth century.
