The Russian Orthodox Church of St Alexander Nevsky is a surprising sight near the magnificent marble church of Frederik V. Its existence in such a proiminent place is owing to the royal connections of the Danes; the Danish princess Dagmar (known to the Russians as Maria Fyodorevna and mother of Nicholas II) donated it at the end of the the nineteenth century to the Orthodox community in Copenhagen. It holds frequent services, and to join the congregation is the obvious way to see the interior, as it is only otherwise open by arrangement.
