During work to rebuild the Christianborg palace in the early twentieth century, extensive excavations revealed remains of two previous buildings on the site, dating back to the twelfth century. Public interest in the ruins of Bishop Absalon’s original Copenhagen Castle, and the fourteenth century Copenhagen Castle which replaced it was great and so the Danish government decided to erect a structure to house them, along with a historical exhibition. The ruins remain a popular attraction and guided tours are available.
