Built by Christian IV in the seventeenth century as an observatory, the Round Tower of Copenhagen still provides outstanding views of most of the old city, owing to the fact that there is no significant high-rise building in the area. Ascending the tower is an unusual experience, since, rather than a staircase, one goes up via a wide spiral walkway. Christian ordered this style of construction, it is said, in order that he might be able to drive a coach and horses to the top. Situated in the heart of the Latin Quarter, the Round Tower holds a central place in Danish consciousness and is mentioned in Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Tinder Box”.
