The Old Town Hall of Ribe ceased to be used for civic functions in 2006, but is now a venue for civil weddings and houses a museum dedicated to the history of the administration of the ancient city. The museum is open to the public and is located in the old debtors’ prison. The museum contains such items as the town’s seal, statute book, spiked mace, standard measures, and civic thumbscrews! The building dates from the fifteenth century and was used as the town hall from the eighteenth. It contains portraits of local dignitaries from as long ago as 1600.
