The Old Lillebælt Bridge is sited to the west of Middelfart. It is 825 metres long and was opened in 1935. It was the first of the great engineering works that linked Denmark’s landmasses and is still an impressive sight. Although plans had been posited since the nineteenth century for such a project, it was not until the world recession inspired public construction projects to use surplus labour that it was finally built. It immediately created a five-fold surge in traffic.
