Odense Slot was built in 1720 by King Frederik IV and lies not far from the city’s railway station. It is built in an Italian baroque style and lies in quite stunning and elaborate gardens. It resembles a very distinguished mansion house rather than the “castle” or “palace” the word “slot” sometimes implies. The building has a particularly interesting story attached to it – it was here that the young Hans Christian Andersen’s mother was employed as a washerwoman and that the great writer was brought to play with noble companions – including a future Frederik VII.
