Nyborg Slot lies in the heart of the east Fyn town. The castle was founded in the twelfth century and was a key fortification and royal palace owing to the strategic location of the town at a narrow point of the Storebælt. Only parts of the castle remain intact, but these make it one of the oldest preserved secular buildings in Denmark. The interior is a museum that contains Renaissance furnishings, models of the castle at various points in its history and exhibitions telling its story. Nyborg Slot has a cafe for visitors.
