The Niels Finsen monument stands to the North of Central Copenhagen, close to the National Hospital. Finsen was one of Denmark’s many Nobel prize winners in a scientific field, and won the prize for demonstrating the important healing and health powers of sunlight. He died tragically young at just 44. The sculpture is entitled "Against The Light" and reflects sculptor Rudolf Tegner’s interpretation of Finsen’s life’s work. Tegner was one of Denmark’s most celebrated twentieth-century sculptors. The sculpture was erected six years after Finsen’s death in 1910.
