The Monastery of the Holy Ghost in Aalborg is a pre-reformation institution that dates from the fifteenth century and once housed both monks and nuns. Part of the the building is intact and is thus of immense historical and architectural interest. Its interior contains frescoes dating back to the sixteenth century. It served as the city’s grammar school for many years. Its original function was as an hospital and almshouse and it is to this function it has essentially reverted as it now provides a sheltered retirement home for the aged.
