The sculpture of the Mermaid that lies in the huge Assistens Cemetery is, needless to say, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s famous story "The Little Mermaid". There are several sculptures around the city of Odense based on Andersen stories, since the world-famous writer was born, and spent his early years, here. This mermaid is perched high on top of a granite pedestal. She is cast in bronze. The sculptor was Hans Pauli Olsen. The statue was unveiled in 1998.
