Maribo Cathedral is an imposing building that stands on the banks of Lake Søndersø. It was established in the early fifteenth century during the reign of Queen Margrethe I. Originally an abbey church, it continued to serve a Lutheran convent after the Reformation. It became a parish church after the town’s main church burnt down, and was made a cathedral in the early nineteenth century. The pulpit is High Renaissance and dates from 1606. You can see the foundations of demolished cloisters to the north and south of the church.
