The Marble church, also known as Frederikskirke, is one of the great landmarks of Copenhagen, its huge dome rising high above most other buildings in the area. It is situated immediately opposite the central square of the Amalienborg palace and the new opera house, which lies across the harbour. At certain times it is possible to go up into the dome for spectacular views across the city. Although a central part of eighteenth-century Frederik V’s conception for the area, the church was not completed until the late nineteenth century. The interior is peaceful and restrained, despite the building’s dramatic exterior.
