The liberty column is a striking sight on the main thoroughfare of Vesterbrogade, near the city centre, though few tourists realise its history. The column was erected as a monument to the abolition of serfdom in the late eighteenth century, which freed the peasantry. Different artists sculpted the four figures around the column. They represent Bravery, Civic Virtue, Fidelity and Industrious Cultivation of the Land. The column was originally erected in 1799. It was substantially restored and renovated in honour of the new millennium.
