Jens Bang’s house is a truly amazing sight and few would believe that it was actually built as the ordinary home of an extremely wealthy merchant. It rises five storeys high and is now the home of a very long-established pharmacy and several exclusive apartments. Built in the early 1600s, many consider it the finest example of Renaissance domestic architecture in Europe, and is a must-see for all strolling around the city. Jens Bang’s extremely ostentatious demonstration of his wealth contains a salutary lesson for the passer-by however – within ten years he had lost everything.
