The statue of Hans Christian Andersen is a monument to the memory of the great writer, who was born in Odense. It stood first in Kongens Have, where it was publicly unveiled in 1888, before being moved to its present position after World War II. The sculptor was Louis Hasselriis. The sculptor had failed to win a competition to create a monument to Andersen in Copenhagen, but was so commited to the idea he persuaded the citizens od Odense to purchase his work by public subscription.
