Gurre slot is the ancient ruin of a castle and is a popular excursion out of town for those living in or visiting Helsingør. The precise origins of the castle are unclear but it is known to have been built in the twelfth century. The castle was expanded in the 1360s by King Valdemar IV, possibly as a precursor to an attack on the Swedish city of Helsingborg soon afterwards. The nearby Chapel of Saint Jacob is thought to be the remains of a chapel founded by Valdemar.
