Lying to the north of Hillerød, Gribskov is the second largest forest in Denmark. It is a haven for wildlife and attracts many walkers, cyclists, horse riders and nature lovers. It covers an area of more than five thousand hectares. More than eight hundred fallow deer live in the forest. The woodland was prime hunting ground for royalty and their guests during the eighteenth and nineteenth century, and you can still follow the established hunting trails. The forest contains a monument to Søren Kierkegaard, who spent a great deal of time here.
