The Memorial for the Fallen of the First World War is found in Aabenraa’s town centre, in Kirkepladsen. It was erected in 1923 and is in the form of a bronze relief depicting soldiers by Johannes Clausen Bjerg. An unusual and poignant aspect of the memorial is its non-partisan nature. This part of Denmark contains a substantial German-speaking minority and has long been disputed by the Danes and Germans, meaning that loyalties have long been divided in wartime.
