Gammeltorv means “Old Square” and it is appropriately-named since it is the oldest square in Copenhagen. It lies off the main shopping thoroughfare of Strøget, very close to the location of the little hamlet which Copenhagen grew from. The square hosts a large number of small stalls which sell ethnic artefacts and jewellery, and “hippy” and New Age wares, some of which are manufactured in the controversial commune of Christiania. The square contains the Caritas fountain, and is surrounded by pleasant cafes and bars.
