Created in 1952, “The Freedom Fighters” is a public monument depicting two young men who symbolise the Danish Resistance struggle during World War Two. It is a sculpture made by J. Gudmundsen Holmgreen. Esbjerg was centrally important in the Danish resistance struggle, of which the nation is justifiably proud, and which is little known outside the country. It was in this town that the Gestapo headquarters were blown up by underground forces; the details of the execution of this plot remain shrouded in mystery.
