The oldest fountain in Copenhagen dates from the beginning of the seventeenth century and was erected, like so much of significance in the city, on the orders of Christian IV. It reflects his love of novelty and innovation in that it features balls of gold which seem to dance in the fountain; a particularly striking sight on bright, sunny days. Unfortunately, the visitor is only treated to this spectacle on state occasions and during the visits of foreign heads of state. The fountain features a sculpture depicting Charity and is also known as Caritas, and provides a popular meeting point for locals and visitors. There are open air cafes nearby.
