Esrum Abbey was founded in the twelfth century. During the medieval period it was the main Cistercian foundation in Denmark. It is set in beautiful countryside near Esrum Lake. The Abbey contains a permanent historical exhibition on the order. Nowadays the Abbey is a prime tourist attraction and cultural centre that hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions, events and concerts. There is a medicinal herb garden that gives an insight into traditional monastic life. You will also find a restaurant, a seventeenth century water mill, a holy spring, and a shop.
