Echo stands in the Hans Christian Andersen Garden, which is located in the centre of Odense on an island in the river. The sculpture was the first to be placed in the garden. It is in bronze and was made in 1888 by Aksel Hansen. It was placed in the garden in the nineteen thirties. It depicts a female nude figure crying out, trying to make herself heard. She is the nymph in the Greek legend of Narcissus, whose self regard caused her to fade away.
