The Copenhagen Zoo is situated in the independent municipality of Frederiksberg, not far to the north of the city centre, and is easily and quickly accessible by bus from the middle of town. It is an old institution, founded in the 1850s, and is situated in a truly beautiful part of town right by an enormous parkland area. The zoo, despite its extensive heritage, is now very much up-to-date and lists education as one of its foremost concerns. It hosts 3300 animals and 264 species (including the polar bear). It has excellent facilities for children.
