Copenhagen synagogue is the centre of Jewish life in the city. Copenhagen has long had an important, and highly assimilated Jewish population; there has been a substantial Jewish population here for three hundred years. Perhaps best known of Jewish Copenhageners is Niels Bohr, the physicist, whose portrait features on the 500 crown note. The synagogue was designed by architect and scholar G.F. Hetsch and was opened in 1833. Guided tours can be arranged by contacting the synagogue.
