The Old Charity School stands on the corner of Paaskestræde and Adelgade, in the heart of old Odense. The building dates from 1570 and is in typical Renaissance style with a half-timbered facade. It is of great interest to tourists since the memorial plaque reveals it was the old school of Hans Christian Andersen. Andersen, who was raised in poverty, is Odense’s most famous son, and probably Denmark’s. The building remained the school for the poor until 1847.
