Carl Nielsen is Denmark’s most famous composer and his picture features on the one hundred crown note. He grew up on the island of Fyn (or Funen), and much of his music contains references to the pastoral idyll of this green, watery island of farmland. His music is widely known outside Denmark, particularly his "Inextinguishable" symphony. The statue was erected in 1927, and like many statues in Copenhagen shows the composer on horseback. The statue is particularly interesting as it was created by Nielsen’s wife, Anne Marie, who was a sculptor.
