The Botanical Gardens, adjacent to the Rosenborg Palace, are part of Copenhagen University. There has been some form of botanical garden in Copenhagen since around 1600, and a fully-functional facility was enabled by a financial donation from Christian VII. The current site was established in the late nineteenth century. According to the university there are twenty five thousand plants of thirteen thousand species. The gardens cover ten hectares. There are hothouses featuring palms, tropical and subtropical plants, cacti and orchids. There is a shop and a cafe for visitors.
