Bishop Absalon was the founder of Copenhagen. The city’s was founded when the medieval bishop ordered a castle to be constructed by the Sound in the twelfth century, although centuries passed before the city became the official capital and royal residence. This statue, where Bishop Absalon is shown mounted on a horse, is large and a key landmark of Copenhagen. It was erected in 1902. On the base of the statue you can see fish; these symbolise the early source of wealth for the capital, namely herring fishing; the fish in the Sound were once said to be so plentiful you could lift them from the water with your hands.
