Augustenborg Slot is a magnificent Rococo palace situated about five kilometres outside Sønderborg, which replaced an entire small village when its original owner decided to build it in the seventeenth century. It contains avenues of trees in its grounds. The gatehouse of the palace houses a museum with an exhibition detailing the history of the castle; in addition the chapel is accessible to visitors. The rest of the palace is used as a hospital.
